Loans with a poor credit history: what to check before applying

When considering a loan with a poor credit history, distinguish an old resolved late payment from a debt that remains unpaid. These are different circumstances. The individual lender assesses the complete situation; advertising that promises loans for everyone does not replace checks or guarantee acceptance.

Start with records rather than more applications

List current agreements, balances and overdue payments. Check whether repaid obligations are reflected accurately. You can access your own commitment information in the Bank of Lithuania’s Loan Risk Database free of charge. This is not a certificate requiring another provider to lend. Other databases and a lender’s internal assessment may cover different information.

What else matters?

A previous delay does not describe the entire household budget. Current documented income, its sustainability, existing instalments and essential expenses also matter. If income has fallen, even a small new payment can be difficult. Inflating income or hiding debts does not remove the underlying risk.

  • Check due dates and overdue amounts.
  • Keep evidence that agreements have been settled.
  • Test the budget without uncertain receipts.
  • Contact the current creditor if payments are already difficult.

Can you pay to clear a history?

Be cautious about services promising an immediate clean record. Inaccurate information can be challenged, but a correctly recorded event is not an error simply because it affects an application. Ask exactly which information would be corrected and on what basis. Do not send identity documents or banking credentials to an unverified intermediary.

When can another loan make things worse?

If new borrowing only covers this month’s instalment, next month may bring payments to two creditors. Assess consolidation through its full cost, term and genuine repayment plan. A lower instalment does not necessarily mean a cheaper solution, particularly where the replacement term is much longer.
